There is also the size, width, weight, and construction of the casing which we really wanted to nail. The way you space the knobs and position the knobs on the tire has a big impact on the performance. There are only so many different tread patterns that work so for me, it's more about really fine tuning all the little details.
With this tire, we knew we wanted a hard pack / all-around tire so there are definitely certain parameters that you've got to stay within in my opinion.
